Surigao del Norte Cacao Planting Activity

To celebrate the Cooperative and Consumer Welfare Month, a cacao planting activity was organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Surigao del Norte Provincial Office, in partnership with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and Provincial Cooperative Development Office (PCDO). The activity was done in Brgy Honrado, San Francisco town, Surigao del Norte.

The activity aimed to impart knowledge to on the proper planting of cacao, its sustainability as an investment, and viability of cacao production as a business venture. It also highlighted the importance of these trees in the climate change battle.


Farmer-members of Honrado Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (HONARBECO) as well as the volunteers participated in the cacao planting.


Certified cacao doctor Ricarte Samosino, who was also in attendance, discussed the local and global demand for cacao products, to encourage the farmer-members to explore cacao farming.

HONARBECO is an organization that processes cacao into tableya, a round thick tablet commonly used to make hot chocolate drinks and a chocolate rice porridge known as champorado.
